Mercy Corps’ TabangKO program helped survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated parts of the Philippines in November 2013. Mercy Corps and its bank partners implemented a cash transfer and financial literacy program to help survivors rebuild their lives and build their financial resistance to future disasters. The program was awarded GSMA’s 2015 Global Mobile Award for “Best use of mobile in emergency or humanitarian situations.”

Mercy Corps needed an effective way to interact with beneficiaries to encourage good financial practices, like saving. They found engageSPARK’s SMS & Voice platform to be innovative, intuitive, and relevant to their project. Mercy Corps sent and received over 844,000 Voice calls and SMS text messages to 20,000 recipients over a twelve-week period in two languages.

The messages were created in a “Soap Opera” style, centering on the fictional story of a couple named Ben and Joy. At the end of each episode, recipients were prompted with a quiz question to reinforce the lesson and to measure comprehension.

engageSPARK is a self-service web application designed so that users can create and launch SMS text and Voice call campaigns extremely easily and quickly. Such campaigns include Blasts, Surveys, Reminders, Alerts, SMS Auto Replies, and Interactive Voice Response (IVR). No tech skills are required to use engageSPARK’s easy, three step wizards, so users with basic Internet skills can build and launch an engagement – as engageSPARK calls SMS or Voice campaigns – in minutes.

A live demo of engageSPARK and the Impacts of the TabangKO Program will be covered.

Speakers

  • Ravi Agarwal, CEO and Co-Founder of engageSPARK
